Claude's authentication model is fundamentally different from a traditional username-and-password login, and that difference is why disposable email is particularly unsuitable for it. Claude does not store a password — instead, it sends a login code to your email each time you sign in from a new browser or device. The email address is not just a contact method; it is the key to the account on every future login.
How Claude authenticates users
When you sign in to Claude at claude.ai:
- You enter your email address.
- Anthropic sends a one-time code or magic link to that address.
- You enter the code or click the link to complete sign-in.
This happens on every new device or browser session. The email is not a formality you complete once and forget — it is the authentication mechanism you depend on every time you return.
What this means for disposable email
A disposable inbox can receive the first sign-in code. The account is created and usable during the inbox's lifetime. The moment the inbox expires — which happens within the hour — the ability to sign in from any new device is gone. This is not a hypothetical risk: clearing your browser cookies, switching devices, or using Claude on a second computer all require a new login code sent to the registered email.
Anthropic's blocklist behaviour
Anthropic filters known disposable domains at the signup step. Most established temporary email services are on this list. The list is updated as new services appear. Some less-catalogued domains may pass through, but the structural problem — the email being required for every future login — remains regardless of whether the domain is blocked at signup.
Claude Pro and API access
Claude Pro (paid subscription) and Anthropic's API both require verified payment information in addition to an email address. The payment step adds an additional identity signal that makes the disposable-address approach even less practical: payment verification links the account to a billing identity regardless of the email used.
What to do instead
An email alias is the right tool here. A forwarding alias routes Claude's login codes to your real inbox, keeps Claude's marketing email separate and disableable, and remains reachable indefinitely. SimpleLogin and AnonAddy both provide free tiers. Apple's Hide My Email is included with iCloud+.
